Dr Samaratunga graduated with a MBBS from the University of Queensland in 2005 and completed
her general physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital with external placements
including The Prince Charles Hospital, Rockhampton Base Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital.
Dr
Samaratunga also completed several rural placements in North and Central Queensland. Her FRACP
was achieved in 2014 which was followed by a 3-year fellowship in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at
both the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Prince Charles Hospital.
Dr Samaratunga has received training in complex areas of sleep medicine including management of
respiratory muscle weakness in neuromuscular disorders such as motor neurone disease, acute and
domiciliary noninvasive ventilation and disorders of hypersomnolence such as narcolepsy. She is also
proficient in managing obstructive sleep apnoea and the occasional complexities with treatment.
Dr Samaratunga also has experience in managing a wide range of respiratory illnesses ranging from
COPD and asthma to lung cancer to more complex interstitial lung diseases. She has developed skills
in pleural intervention, ultrasound and bronchoscopy through accredited training and expertise.
Dr Samaratunga is a lecturer at the University of Queensland and has presented at national meetings
through the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and Australasian Sleep Association on
both sleep and respiratory issues and is a member of both societies.
She is currently practising as a Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Physician at Greenslopes Private
Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital.
Dr John Aukes graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994. He undertook Respiratory training at Greenslopes Private Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital. He has been working in private practice since 2004.
Dr Aukes holds memberships with the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand,
Australian Medical Association, European Respiratory Society, and WABIP.
Dr Aukes is actively involved in the teaching and supervision of Respiratory Advanced
Training Registrars and junior doctors at Greenslopes Private Hospital. He also gives time
for medical student teaching. Dr Aukes held the position of Chair of the Respiratory Unit at
Greenslopes Private Hospital from 2007 to 2017.
While he enjoys all aspects of respiratory medicine, his special interests include lung cancer,
bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS-TBNA), COPD, and interstitial lung disease.

Dr Timothy Edwards graduated from University of Queensland in 2008. He completed his Respiratory and
Sleep Medicine training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Dr
Edwards completed a Lung Cancer fellowship at the
University Hospital of South Manchester, UK and
Interventional Pulmonology fellowship at Glenfield
Hospital, Leicester, UK. This involved delivery of a lung
cancer screening program and rapid access lung cancer
clinic.
Dr Edwards has a special interest in lung cancer, lung
nodules, bronchoscopy, Endobronchial Ultrasound
(EBUS) and pleural disease. He does consult in all
aspects of respiratory and sleep medicine including
COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease and sleep
disorders.
Dr Edwards is a Senior Lecturer at the University of
Queensland. He also holds an appointment at the
Princess Alexandra Hospital and is actively involved in
research and teaching.
He is a reporting physician for SleepCare and has
experience in a wide variety of sleep disorders. Dr
Edwards currently leads the Princess Alexandra
Hospital Motor Neurone Disease clinic managing
patients with complex sleep disordered breathing.
